THE BEACH
BOYS
Sunday, March 29, 2009
Activity Level: Level One
The band was formed in 1961 by three brothers from Hawthorne,
California—Brian, Carl, and Dennis Wilson—their cousin
Mike Love, and a friend, Al Jardine. The Beach Boys moved quickly
from local to national fame with a run of hit songs during the
mid-1960s.
Based largely on an ideal of California adolescence, the group’s
records helped define a style known as surf music. In 1988, the
band was elected to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Although
the Beach Boys were perennially popular as creators and performers
of catchy tunes that celebrated a carefree California lifestyle,
they were notable also for their intricate vocal arrangements
and inventive use of the recording studio.
The Beach Boys were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of
Fame in 1988. “Good Vibrations” received a Grammy
Hall of Fame Award in 1994, and the band was honored in its 40th
anniversary year with a Lifetime Achievement Award (2001).
During the first half of the 1960s the Beach Boys released a
string of hit singles, including “Surfin’ U.S.A.,” “Surfer
Girl,” “Fun, Fun, Fun,” “I Get Around,” “Help
Me, Rhonda,” and “California Girls.”
