Boston & Cape Cod, American Heritage Fall Foliage Tour
October 14-20, 2008
7-Day Fly in Tour
Activity Level: Three
We’ll begin this American Heritage journey in the winding
streets of 17th century Boston. One of America’s oldest
cities, Boston was founded in 1630 and is a bustling, vibrant
city filled with history, tradition and old world elegance.
We’ll trace the roots of our country as this American
Heritage Tour takes us from Plymouth where the Pilgrims landed,
to the bewitching seaport of Salem. We’ll “sail away” from
Hyannis in Cape Cod to the “Storybook Island” of
Martha’s Vineyard.
Stand on the Lexington Green and learn how the farmers rallied to meet the
British and where the first shots were fired.
View
the natural seaside beauty for which Newport, R.I. is known.
Visit one of the magnificent mansions and gardens
built
by the industrial barons of America’s Gilded Age.
All this and more you will experience on this diverse American
Heritage Fall Foliage Tour.
Day
1: Our early morning flight from Omaha takes us to Boston,
arriving late morning. Our local guide takes
us for a tour of
the historic ride of Paul Revere through Lexington and Concord,
where the first military engagements of the American Revolutionary
War took place. We’ll then continue to our hotel at Plymouth
where we will be spending the next 6 nights.
*Dinner included
*Hilton Garden Inn, Plymouth, MA
Day
2: Today we meet our local guide for a tour of Plymouth, with
time along Plymouth’s water-front. After viewing Plymouth
Rock, we’ll step aboard the Mayflower II and visit the
Plimoth Plantation. Here it is always 1627 in the village of “New
Plymouth”. Interact with these Pilgrims and learn firsthand
about their households, cooking, harvesting, livestock and gardening.
Live the history of Plymouth Colony which begins in 1620 with
the landing of the Mayflower at Cape Cod and ends with the absorption
of Plymouth into Massachusetts Bay Colony in 1692.
*Breakfast & Dinner included
Day
3: After breakfast at the hotel, we depart for Cape Cod, departing
from Hyannis by Ferry to Martha’s Vineyard. We’ll
see Oak Bluffs’ brightly-painted “gingerbread” cottages,
and the town’s Flying Horses, the oldest continuously working
carousel in America. We’ll visit Vineyard Haven, the picturesque
year-round ferry port, and Edgartown, an elegant yachting center,
its streets still lined with whaling captains’ stately
homes. Upon return to Cape Cod we visit the John F. Kennedy Museum
and enjoy dinner here before returning to Plymouth.
*Breakfast and Dinner included
Day
4: Today we return to Boston for a tour of the city which takes
us by many famous sites as the Old State
House, Granary
Burying Ground, Park Street Church, Boston Common, the Public
Garden and the USS Constitution, better known as “Old Ironsides”.
We’ll also enjoy a culinary walking tour through the historic
Italian North End with many samples, followed by lunch in the
area. We’ll have time for shopping and browsing in Quincy
Market before returning to Plymouth.
*Breakfast & Lunch included
Day
5: This morning we begin with a visit to the seaside artist
colony of Rockport. Enjoy some free time
to stroll through the
shops and galleries viewing many delightful works of art by local
artisans. Then we travel to Salem, famous for its witch trial
of the 17th century. We’ll witness firsthand the Salem
Witch Hysteria at the Witch Museum. The presentation is emotional
and impressive; using lifesize figures in stage sets with a soundtrack
narration. This afternoon we visit the House of Seven Gables,
a 17th century dwelling made famous by the classic tale by Nathaniel
Hawthorne. From Salem we journey to the fishing village of Gloucester,
now made famous with the movie “The Perfect Storm”.
Here we’ll enjoy a delicious Lobsterbake.

6: Our short drive this morning finds us in Newport, R.I. where
we will enjoy a tour of the famous “Ten Mile Drive”,
which winds along the rugged coastline, showing many privately
owned mansions facing the Atlantic Ocean. Newport was where the
rich and famous resided during their summer vacations in the
golden era. We will be touring “The Breakers Mansion”,
which resembles an Italian palace, built by Cornelius Vanderbilt.
We’ll have lunch on our own at the Brick Marketplace, and
then visit the Newport Winery, which has won many awards for
its fine wines. This evening we enjoy a delicious “farewell
